Destination Niagara Falls NY Cruises
The Niagara Falls were formed some 12,000 years ago from the same glacial melt undertaking that formed the Great Lakes at the end of the last Ice Age. Niagara Falls is made up of a cluster of 3 waterfalls located on the south end of the Niagara Gorge. The 3 falls are the Horseshoe Falls (also known as the Canadian Falls), the American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. Because the Niagara river drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, it creates the highest flow rate of any waterfall in Northern America. In order to see the Niagara River flowing over the edge of Niagara Falls, you need to be between Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York. The falls reach a vertical height of 176 feet and the water rushes over the falls at about 25 miles per hour.
Niagara Falls State Park in New York is open 365 days a year and is visited by millions of people annually and it is America's oldest state park. The park has numerous interactive exhibits, amusements, and hiking trails. The park is home to the Aquarium of Niagara where you can see Humboldt penguins, sea lions, and penguins.
Niagara Falls is truly a magnificent sight but it is also a valuable source of hydroelectric power. The world's first hydroelectric power plant was built at Niagara Falls in 1885 by Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse. It supplies more than 1/4 of all the power that is used in New York State and in Ontario, Canada.
The falls are located 17 miles north-northwest of Buffalo, New York and about 75 miles south-southeast of Toronto, Canada. To visit the New York side of the falls we recommend you extend your stay in New York (Embarkation or Debarkation day) to plan a day trip to see the falls. (It's approximately a 6 hour drive from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal and 30 minutes away from Buffalo New York.).
