Destination Boothbay Harbor, Maine Cruises

Boothbay Harbor, Maine has a total land/water area of 9.22 square miles and is located on a peninsula in the Gulf of Maine.  The history of Boothbay Harbor is quite an interesting town rich in history.  It was first occupied by Europeans as a British fishing station on Cape Newagen in 1623.  By the 1630's, a few families had settled down there.  In 1666, Henry Curtis purchased the land from sachem Mowhotiwormet (formerly known as Chief Robinhood) which gave them the right to stake claims to the land.  However, in 1869, they were ran out of the village during King William's War and so the area remained desolate for 40 years.   By 1730, Scots-Irish Presbyterians began to settle there and it began to grow and was incorporated in 1764.  That led to the area being renamed and incorporated as Boothbay Harbor in 1842.

Boothbay Harbor is home to several great activities like the Boothbay Playhouse, Boothbay Railway Village, and the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.  There is also the Popham Beach and Permaquid Point Lighthouse.  Boothbay Harbor has a great selection of restaurants, particularly seafood.   You can also escape on a world-class boat excursion, or shop til you drop in their street side boutiques.  The Maine State Aquarium is also located in Boothbay Harbor.  It has a fantastic display of fish and regional invertebrates that you can see in the granite like cliffs of its main gallery.  The Burnt Island Lighthouse which opened in 1821, is the second oldest in Maine.  This 5 acre facility offers a rich look into the history of the lighthouse and the family who lived there.  If time permits, check out the Carousel Music Theatre or the Pythian Opera House in town as well.  There are also numerous lobster landings along the coastline to see.  The Maine lobster industry brings in about 435 million + in annual revenue.
