Destination Montreal, Quebec Cruises

Montreal is one of the oldest cities in North America.  It was founded by French explorer Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642.  The city's Old Port was built to accommodate expanding fur trade on the St. Lawrence River.  Montreal is the largest city in Canada's Quebec Province and it is positioned on an island in the Saint Lawrence River.

Montreal got its name from Mt. Royal which is the triple peaked hill located in the center of the area.  The city was a bustling fur trading post in the 16th century.  The first colony was developed there in 1642 and called Ville Mari and was later incorporated in 1832.  Montreal was the largest city in Canada until the 70's when Toronto surpassed their title.

Montreal is a very French Colonial Vieux-Montreal with Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica at its heart with beautiful cobblestone.  This dynamic city is full of amazing foot, festivals, and outdoor activities.  Montreal is one of the five largest French speaking cities in the world, Paris being the first.

If you are a foodie, Montreal has the highest number of restaurants per capita in all of Canada, and is the second highest in all of North America.

Another interesting fact is that there is a cross on the Mount Royal Mountain and no structure is allowed to be built taller than the cross.

Quebec City is a Port of Call for the following New England Cruises:

Montreal is proud to have well over a dozen farmers markets that offer locally grown products. If you are interested in checking these out, try the open-air Jean Talon market in Little Italy, or stroll through Lachine on Rue Notre Dame, which is the oldest public market in Montreal (founded 1845). Make sure you ask to taste a fresh Quebec field tomato. These markets also offer artisanal breads and local cheeses.  You can easily pick up all you need for a picnic lunch.
Make sure you stop by and check out Montreal's Biodome Insectarium, Planetarium and Botanical Garden.  They all three form the Space for Life which is dedicated to nature, science, and sustainable living.

There are several things to explore like restaurants and gift shops.  It will give you a great look into the greener side of Montreal.
