Destination Nantucket, Massachusetts Cruises
Nantucket Island is located about 30 miles south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts across from the triangle shaped Nantucket Sound. Martha's Vineyard separates Nantucket from the Muskeget Channel by 15 miles. The island is about 15 miles long and ranges from 3 to 6 miles wide (304 square miles). There are wide sandy beaches and a generous harbor for cruise ships and all kinds of commodities.
In 1966, the National Park Service named Nantucket a National Historic Landmark District. It was due to the fact that it was the "finest surviving architectural and environmental example of a late 18th and early 19th century New England seaport town."
Nantucket is known as the "Grey Lady". Frost pockets cause "foggy bottoms" from the denser cold moist air that is surrounded by warmer air. The name comes from sailors due to the fog that sweeps in quickly giving it a grey hue. The island is 10 degrees warmer in the winter, and 10 degrees cooler in the summer then the mainland due to its close proximity to the Gulf Stream.
The Port of Nantucket is accessible by two different ferry lines, Hy-Line Cruises and the Steamship Authority and they operate year round. It takes approximately 1 hour travel time on their high speed passenger catamarans. Steamship Authority operates a car and passenger ferry as well and it takes 2 1/4 hours travel time.
The town is well known for its Nantucket bay scallops, lighthouses, whaling industry, terrific fishing, Main Street, Festivals, and Breweries.
Various celebrities own homes in Nantucket, like Anne Meara, Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor.
Nantucket has several notable galleries and museums like the Nantucket Whaling Museum, and the Maria Mitchell Association and it is home to visual and performing arts. The island holds various festivals throughout the year such as wine and food festivals, comedy festivals, daffodil festivals, and the popular cranberry festival.
